PRODUCT AND SPATIAL DESIGN     WOODWORK     LIGHTING DESIGN
Within a group of four, I designed and built a Chandelier out of four recycled wine crates.  Our assignment was to create a lighting fixture that could be used wholly as one large fixture, as well as separately.  Inspired by items like cutout paper lanterns, my three group-mates and I decided to approach this assignment by drilling holes into wine crates in the shapes of sacred geometric symbols, and placing Edison lightbulbs within each box.  Since we were environmentally-conscious students with tight budgets, we sourced our wine crates through visiting a few of the local wine and liquor stores in Greenwich Village, explaining our concept, and asking if they would be willing to donate or sell four wine crates to us.  The multi-functional component of the fixture is made possible through the hinges that connect the boxes together.  When hanging all together in the circular fashion shown above, they operate as a chandelier.  However, once any two of the boxes are disconnected, the four boxes can be unfurled to be displayed abreast.  Even further, they can be separated and operate as four individual light fixtures.
